Flood Insurance

Why Should You Have Flood Insurance?

Flood damage is not covered by standard homeowners, renters, or condo insurance. A single inch of water can cause thousands of dollars in repairs, and floods can happen almost anywhere — not just in high-risk areas. Flood insurance provides financial protection to repair or rebuild your home, replace belongings, and recover after unexpected water damage.

Frequently Asked Questions:

1. Is flood insurance included in my homeowners policy?

No. Homeowners, renters, and condo insurance do not cover flood damage. Flood insurance is a separate policy designed specifically for water damage caused by natural flooding.

2. What does flood insurance cover?

It generally covers two main areas:

  • Building coverage: The structure of your home, including foundation, electrical and plumbing systems, appliances, and built-in features.

  • Contents coverage: Personal belongings like furniture, clothing, electronics, and other valuables inside the home.

3. Who needs flood insurance?

Anyone can benefit from flood coverage. Even if you don’t live in a high-risk flood zone, about one in five flood claims come from areas with low to moderate risk. If you’re in a designated high-risk area, lenders may require it.

4. How much does flood insurance cost?

Premiums vary based on your location, flood risk, property value, and the type of coverage you select. Homes in higher-risk areas typically have higher costs, but rates can also be affordable in lower-risk zones.

5. Does flood insurance cover temporary living expenses?

No. Flood insurance typically does not include coverage for additional living expenses (like hotel stays or meals) if your home becomes uninhabitable. That expense would need to be covered separately.
