Pet Insurance

Why Should You Consider Pet Insurance?

Pet insurance helps manage unexpected veterinary expenses—from accidents and illnesses to routine wellness care (if included). With rising vet costs, having coverage ensures your pet receives the best possible care without putting a strain on your finances or forcing tough choices.

Frequently Asked Questions:

1. What types of coverage are available?

 Most comprehensive plans cover:

  • Accidents (broken bones, swallowed objects, toxic ingestions)

  • Illnesses (infections, chronic conditions, cancer)

  • Diagnostics and testing (X-rays, MRIs, bloodwork)

  • Surgery and hospitalization

  • Prescription medications

  • Alternative therapies like acupuncture or chiropractic (when prescribed by a vet)
Wellness care (annual exams, vaccines, grooming, training) is usually optional through a preventive add-on.

2. What are common exclusions?

 Typical exclusions include:

  • Pre-existing conditions (unless curable and symptom-free for a set period)

  • Cosmetic or elective procedures (like tail docking or declawing)

  • Breeding, pregnancy, or whelping-related costs

  • Preventive and routine care without a wellness add-on

3. How do deductibles, reimbursement rates, and limits work?

  •  Deductible: You choose an annual amount you’ll pay before coverage kicks in.

  • Reimbursement rate: After your deductible, the plan covers a percentage of eligible costs (commonly 70%, 80%, or 90%).

  • Annual limit: You select an annual maximum payout (with some plans offering unlimited coverage).

This flexibility helps you tailor coverage to your budget and needs.

4. Will pre-existing conditions ever be covered?

Most pre-existing conditions are excluded. However, some curable conditions (like ear infections or GI issues) may be eligible if your pet shows no symptoms or treatment needs for a defined period, typically 12 months. Incurable conditions (like diabetes or arthritis) remain excluded.

5. Is there a waiting period before coverage starts?

Yes. Most policies have:

  • Accidents: coverage begins in about 2 days

  • Illnesses: coverage begins after 14 days

  • Orthopedic conditions (dogs only): may have a 6-month waiting period (which can sometimes be reduced with a vet exam/waiver).

6. Can I take my pet to any veterinarian?

Yes—most plans allow you to visit any licensed vet, including emergency or specialty clinics. Claims are usually reimbursed afterward.

7. Are multi-pet discounts available?

Yes. Many providers offer a discount when you insure more than one pet under the same policyholder.

8. Does age or breed affect coverage?

Yes. Older pets can still be insured, but accident-only coverage may be the only option after a certain age. Premiums and coverage eligibility can also vary by breed due to hereditary or congenital conditions.

9. Can I change or cancel my policy later?

Yes. Policies are adjustable at renewal (deductible, reimbursement rate, or limits). If you cancel within the policy’s money-back guarantee period (often 30 days) and no claims have been paid, you’ll typically receive a full refund.
